February 14th
- Valentines Day Flowers and Gifts.
February 14th is recognised throughout the world as
Valentines Day, a day for love and romance, sending loved ones romantic
cards with romantic poems, sending cards to people you have a crush
on – signing it ‘from your valentine’ or ‘from
?’, buying chocolates, flowers, and gifts for your loved ones.
With the days of the internet you can even send an ‘e-valentine
card’ from popular internet sites!
It is a day that is most sought after in most churches
for weddings.
But, did you know that February 14th is originally
known for being a saints day - that of St. Valentine and that the
catholic church recognises at least 3 Valentines (or Valentinus)
all of whom gained martyrdom. Around 498 AD, Pope Gelasius put in
place that 14th February is the day to honour St. Valentine.
There are many different legends about St. Valentine,
one suggests he was a priest who performed marriages of young people
in secret because Emperor Claudius II had prohibited marriage of
all single men, and his reasoning was that single men made better
warriors than married men with families! When Valentine was found
out Emperor Claudius had him ‘put to death’. He died
on February 14th.
Another legend states that whilst Valentine was in
prison, he was visited by a young lady, probably related to the
jailor. He fell in love with her and shortly before his death wrote
her a letter ending it with ‘from your Valentine’ –
this is still used as an ‘anonymous’ signature today.
It is believed that the remains of St. Valentine (or
what are thought to be his remains) were given to an Irish priest
in 1835 by Pope Gregory XVI. These are on display in a church in
Dublin, Ireland every Valentines day.
Around the middle of the 18th century, valentines
day was popularly celebrated. Lovers would exchange small gifts
of their affection.
The charming child like Cupid is often associated
with Valentines day; he was the son of Venus – the roman goddess
of love. Red roses were said to be the favourite flower of Venus
– perhaps this is why they are so popular on Valentines day!
